A short biog

The life of an Award Winning Writer

I was born in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire (now Teeside) in October 1956.
My family moved to Clevedon, North Somerset in the winter of 1963 when my father got a job with George Wimpey & Sons as a safety inspector; to this day I don't know if it was luck or insider information that got him the job, as a few months later he would have lost his job with the steel works as Cargo Fleet closed down.
Though I never had a pet as a child I have always loved and cared for animals.
In my teens, I joined the Royal Air Force and got posted to stations in Scotland, Germany, and Northern Ireland. The station in Scotland is now under the control of the Royal Navy, and the one in Germany is now a civil airport for the region.
After leaving the Air Force, at the age of 24, I spent the next 15 years working in the Bristol City Museum service. The early years were very enjoyable, but the later years were terrible as the service turned into a police state with promotions going only to ex-policemen.
In my story "Sexual Explosions" the main character tells of an unsolved crime at his former workplace, this story is based on fact as I was the person who reported the theft of a Roman artifact to the curator.
At the time of my dismissal, on health grounds, the theft remained unsolved, and to this day I think it is one of several reasons I never got promoted despite being one of the most respected and versatile people in the security side of our service.

One of the main reasons for me not being promoted is this would have posed problems at meeting of the senior security officers each month, as the bosses knew I would raise the question of the theft, and a friend of mine would have to record my question in the committees notes; forcing them to make a proper investigation and expose the level of corruption caused by having Freemasons covering each other for crimes committed.
A few years later, another theft was exposed when a curator came across several items from a museum in a second-hand shop in Henbury-on- Trym, including a fireplace.

During the period 2010 - 2018, I turned to my passion for being a writer, though one of my short story selections won an award in 2012, and from 2014 - 2017 I had a successful science fiction series of e-books selling on Draft2Digital the prospect was a failure to me.

Since 2018, I have been watching Netflix most nights as I have an interest in foreign films and tv series, as I find UK television dull beyond words.
In 2020, I decided to stop chasing my dream and stopped writing ebooks, what I have is for sale on Apple -     https://books.apple.com/us/author/alan-place/id504489780.

From 2024, the only way to buy an ebook of mine is to contact me.
I am taking my ebooks off Amazon as none have sold, and Draft2Digital have turned into nothing more than a SCAM.

I have three plans.
A - you may see a story you like, and approach me to buy a copy.
B - You may have an idea of what you like, but not know if I have anything in my collection to meet your taste; please ask as I am always willing to help.
C - You could ask me to write a story for you.

My costs are minimal, and negotiable.

  1. Interesting! Note that there are good samples available for most of Alan’s books on the Apple Books website.
