I could write a book on my experiences with publishers

It would kill the publishing world

I could write a book, or at least a short story, about my experiences with the world of publishing; if I did, it would probably put any writer off the idea of being published.
In my experience, there are a few things you need to get a book published; I said when I began my journey, all those 15 years ago, you need money, and I stand by that now. Without money, you cannot afford to go to college to earn a degree, without a degree a publisher won't take you serious. Without money, you cannot pay for the publicity to get work seen, so there will be no sales.

Another vital element is to live in the USA; I sent numerous emails to publishers, most got ignored; if I did get a reply it was a generic refusal with only the name changed, one publisher proved they never read my request they got my gender, and name wrong.
These days you need to pick your distributor carefully, a lot of sites are a scam, as I found out this year.
