The main reason I view myself as a journalist rather than a writer is I usually write short stories, not novel length books.
I have said often that I admire Jane Austen, but I write more like Mickey Spillane; if something is in my story it has a purpose other than padding the pages.
I have written several longer stories, and if I thought they would get read I am sure I could repeat the process, and write a fuller length story.
